BIG congrats out to Heather!
The Cell and Molecular Biology faculty at the University of Virginia provides a comprehensive graduate training program in modern cell and molecular biological sciences. It is the purpose of the program to provide the widest possible choice of mentors, and hence, research areas, while offering an individually-tailored academic program for each graduate student. We believe that the best biological scientists are those who possess a broad knowledge of cell and molecular biology, as well as a thorough understanding of their own particular research area. Kendra has had quite an exciting 2 weeks in the lab! She not only successfully defended her area paper and passed her qualifying exam, she was also named a 2021 Raven Fellow and was just awarded a Jefferson Fellowship!
The Raven Society established the Raven Fellowships in 1984 to encourage undergraduate and graduate student pursuit of scholarly, intellectual, and creative projects. The Raven Society endeavors to bring together outstanding students, faculty, administrators, and alumni of the various schools of the University so that they may derive the benefits of mutual acquaintance in pursuit of diligent scholarship and intellectual activity beyond the limits of systematic work in the classroom. As such, the Raven Fellowships target innovative research projects that cross disciplines in novel ways. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation encourages applicants from a broad range of GSAS disciplines. The strongest applicants will be those who have exhibited a capacity for the highest levels of scholastic achievement, who have (or will have) advanced to candidacy within the standard timeline outlined by their home department, and who are prepared to pursue ambitious dissertation projects that have the potential to transform their disciplines. Successful applicants will also demonstrate a commitment to sharing their knowledge discovery with a broader audience through achievements in teaching and academic outreach. Congrats Kendra on all of your achievements! Rebecca was just awarded a UVA 2021 Beckman Scholarship for her work in the lab. She is on fire, and we are so excited for her to join us back in person soon!
https://engineering.virginia.edu/future-undergrads/academics/beckman-scholars A HUGE congrats goes out to Rebecca Wu for being awarded a Harrison Award! Made possible through the generosity of the late David A. Harrison III and his family, the Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards fund up to forty outstanding undergraduate research projects each year. Student applicants will propose a substantial and significant research project under the supervision of a UVA faculty mentor to be carried out in the summer and subsequent academic year following application for the award. Way to go Rebecca!
