HUGE congrats go out to Kendra for receiving a UVA Brain Institute Fellowship! This competitive fellowship will cover Kendra's 2nd year in the lab. Way to go!!
Yunlu defended his PhD and graduated last September. But we just got word that he won not one, but TWO awards for his work in the lab!
The first is the Fleming Prize for an outstanding PhD dissertation in UVA Biology. On top of his excellent PhD dissertation, he made big advances in his field and also had a high-profile paper come out in 2019. As part of the Fleming Prize, Yunlu will receive a cash prize, an engraved Jefferson cup, and an invitation to return to UVA in the future to present his postdoctoral research to the department. The second award is the James Dent Award. This is awarded for a dissertation or publication in developmental biology or endocrinology, plus interest and potential in one or both of these fields, and a dedication to the principles of scholarship and personal integrity which marked the tenure of Professor Dent at UVA. Congratulations Yunlu, and we can't wait for your return visit to give a seminar on your new postdoctoral work! Maria has won the 2020 Graduate Biosciences Society’s Student Leadership Award! "This student-nominated award recognizes graduate students in the Biosciences who have made outstanding and notable academic, professional, social, and/or service contributions for the University of Virginia and the local community. This award is meant to commend well-rounded graduate students who have served as leaders either at the University of Virginia or in the local community." Congratulations, Maria!
Congratulations to Kim for being awarded the Biology Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award this year! This award covers Kim's stipend for a semester and provides funds to her and Celia, her undergraduate partner, to travel to a meeting. Awesome award and well deserved!
